What the fluency passage generator makes
It writes an original reading passage at the grade level you ask for, laid out for a timed one-minute read. Every line ends with a running word count in brackets, so when the timer stops you can see at a glance how many words the reader reached. Under the passage you get the total word count, three to five comprehension questions with answers, a few words to preview and a quick timing tip. Ask for fiction or nonfiction, any topic your reader cares about, and a target length if you have one.
How to use the passages for fluency practice
Give the reader the passage without the numbers and keep the numbered copy for yourself. Start a one-minute timer, mark any words read incorrectly, and stop at the minute. Subtract the errors from the running count on the last line reached to get words correct per minute. Then use the comprehension questions so speed never replaces understanding. For repeated reading, ask for a second passage at the same level and topic, or have the child reread the same passage over a few days and compare the counts.
Tips for better passages
Name the grade, the topic and fiction or nonfiction in your request, for example "3rd grade nonfiction passage about honeybees, 160 words". Add "include dialogue" for expression practice or "short sentences" for a newer reader. If the passage feels too hard, ask for an easier version at the same length. Always read it yourself first and change any word your reader has not met. For phonics-controlled texts for beginning readers, try the Decodable Passage Generator instead.
