Who uses a random group generator

Teachers making groups

Paste your class list and make random groups for projects, reading circles or lab partners in seconds. Use keep-apart for students who work better separately.

PE and sports

Split a class or a pickup game into even teams without the playground picking order. Turn on captains to name a leader for each side.

Work meetings and icebreakers

Use it as a random group generator for breakout rooms, workshops, hackathons or lunch buddies, so people meet colleagues outside their usual circle.

Game nights and trivia

Make fair teams for quiz nights, board games, charades or family reunions, and let the AI suggest fun team names from a theme like Space or Animals.

Frequently asked questions

Is this random team generator free?

Yes. It is free to use. Make as many teams and groups as you like. The optional AI team names are paced on very heavy use, like every AI tool on AllAILab; splitting names into teams never waits.

Is it really random?

Yes. Your browser shuffles the list with the Fisher-Yates method, using its built-in cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) where available, so every order is equally likely. Then it deals the names into teams whose sizes differ by at most one.

Can I keep two people apart?

Yes. Open More options and type pairs under Keep apart, one pair per line, like "Sam, Alex". The generator puts them on different teams whenever the numbers allow it. If a rule cannot be met, for example three people kept apart with only two teams, it tells you which pair ended up together.

Can I make teams of a set size?

Yes. Choose "People per team" and enter a number from 2 to 50. The tool makes as many groups as needed and balances them, so with 10 names and groups of 4 you get groups of 4, 3 and 3 instead of 4, 4 and 2.

Are my names saved or sent anywhere?

No. Your list stays in your browser: the teams are made on your device and the names are never uploaded or stored. If you turn on Fun team names, only the theme you type and the number of teams are sent to our AI, never the names.

How many names can I use?

Up to 500 names, each up to 60 characters. You can make from 2 to 50 teams.

Can I print or copy the teams?

Yes. Press Print for a clean sheet with every team and its members (choose Save as PDF in the print window for a file), or Copy as text to paste the teams into a chat, email or slide.

What is the difference between a random team generator and a random group generator?

They are the same thing: both split a list of people into random teams or groups. Use number of teams for sports and games, and people per team for class groups or breakout rooms.
