Remove Background from Signature

Upload a photo or scan of your handwritten signature and get a transparent PNG for PDFs, Word documents and forms. It runs in your browser, so your signature is never uploaded. Free to use.

Sign in dark ink on plain white paper, take the photo in even light, and crop it close to the signature. Your image is processed in your browser and is never uploaded.

How to make a transparent signature

  1. 1

    Photograph your signature

Sign in dark ink on plain white paper. Take a photo in even light, or scan it, and crop close to the signature.

  2. 2

    Upload and adjust

Upload the JPG, PNG or WEBP. The paper turns transparent at once. Pick original ink, black or blue, and use the cleanup slider if smudges or shadow remain.

  3. 3

    Download the PNG

Download your transparent signature PNG, or copy it and paste it straight into a document, PDF editor or email signature.

Where to use your transparent signature

Sign PDFs and forms

Place the transparent PNG on the signature line of a PDF form, a letter or an application, with no white box around it.

Word and Google Docs

Insert the PNG as an image and set it to sit in front of the text, so your signature sits neatly on the line.

Invoices and quotes

Add your signature to invoices, quotes, receipts and delivery notes for your small business.

Letters and certificates

Sign cover letters, reference letters, award certificates and class certificates in a clean, consistent way.

Tips for a clean signature

Use dark ink

A black or dark blue pen on white paper gives the cleanest result. Light pencil can lose thin strokes.

Even light, no shadow

Photograph near a window or under a ceiling light and keep your phone's shadow off the paper.

Crop close

Crop the photo close to the signature first, so the edge of the paper or the table is not in the picture.

Sign a bit larger

A larger signature keeps more detail, so it still looks sharp when you scale it down in a document.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove the background from a signature?

Upload a photo or scan of your signature on white paper. The tool makes the paper transparent and keeps the ink, then you download a PNG. If grey marks remain, slide Cleanup to the right; if thin strokes disappear, slide it to the left.

Is my signature uploaded or stored?

No. The background is removed in your browser on your own device. Your photo and the result are never uploaded to our servers or stored by us.

Why is the result a PNG?

PNG keeps transparency, so the signature has no white box around it when you place it on a document. JPG does not support transparency.

Can I change the ink colour?

Yes. Keep the original ink colour, or turn the signature solid black or blue, which often looks cleaner on printed documents.

Does it work on lined, coloured or textured paper?

It works best on plain white paper. Light lines and soft shadows are usually removed; for dark ruled lines or strong colour, sign again on plain paper for a clean result.

Can I use the transparent signature on legal documents?

You can place it on any document you are allowed to sign. Whether an image of a signature is accepted depends on the document and the rules where you are, so for contracts check what the other party or your e-signature service requires.

Is it free?

Yes. It is free to use, with no limit on how many signatures you clean up, and no watermark on the PNG.
