Where the grain comes from
Phones and cameras raise the sensor gain in dim light, at concerts, indoors and at night. That adds grain and coloured speckles, worst in dark areas and plain surfaces. The denoise tool removes it and keeps the detail that belongs there.
Clean, not plastic
Cheap noise reduction smears everything into a waxy look. Here skin keeps its pores, fabric keeps its weave and edges stay crisp; only the random speckle goes. If you want it smoother still, ask for "stronger noise reduction".
Good photos to try
Night street shots, dim restaurant photos, indoor event pictures, astrophotography and old film scans with heavy grain. For film grain you want to keep as a style, say "remove only the colour noise".
