Why pictures turn into squares
A thumbnail, an old avatar or a heavily compressed image has very few pixels. Blow it up and every pixel becomes a visible square. The unpixelate tool redraws the picture at a higher resolution, smoothing the stair-step edges and filling in the detail those squares stood for.
Photos, art and screenshots
It works on photos of people and pets, product pictures, artwork and screenshots. The colours, layout and subject stay as they are; only the blockiness goes.
Honest limits
The AI rebuilds detail that the blur or blocks hid. On heavily damaged photos the result is a best estimate, so small text, logos and fine patterns can come back slightly different from the real thing. Pixelation added on purpose to hide a face, a number plate or private details is not reversed.
